Solar power panels were initially bulky and their design wasn't all too well suited for home decor. This is the reason why they weren't so popular. But the latest technology has enabled creation of thin film photovoltaic cells. These individual cells are capable of absorbing one range of the spectrum in sunlight. When a group of them are layered together, they have a good capacity to generate power. Use of these photovoltaic cells made of amorphous silicon has enabled manufacture of thin solar panels which can be embedded in roofs in the form of shingles. These solar panels are dark and look no different from the ordinary roofs and hence don't stand out.

Solar power panels made using Cadmium telluride technology cost cheaper at $1 per watt of solar energy. Solar panels used for residences comprise of 4 parts, the solar array, mounting structures, DC disconnects and the inverter. Because these panels usually give clean energy and are more eco friendly than most other energy sources, the government supports them with a 30% tax credit on the purchase of residential solar panels which makes them cheaper and easy to use. Also, one can bring down the costs and improve the reliability and efficiency by using a greater number of solar panels. Usage of solar panels and other solar appliances can help house owners to save as much as 50 % on the electricity and heating bills which is quite a significant saving.

Solar power reviews are usually positive about eco friendliness, renewability and energy savings from the use of solar panels. However, the main concerns hover around the relatively high upfront cost for the installation of solar systems. However, most house owners who have used solar panels feel this cost pays for itself very quickly through savings in electricity bills. Also, solar panels aren't very effective on cloudy days and some of them need good placement and proper angle to absorb maximum sunlight. The expertise in installation of solar systems is still not very high and common. With growing research, solar power would get cheaper and the panels better designed to suit modern homes.
