This is a very well done guide to sealing up air leaks in your home. Lots of good how-to pictures. A couple small add-ons I would make: - Replacing older can lights so that you can insulate right over them is a fairly easy DIY job -- it has the advantages of both reducing heat loss to the attic and getting some heat gain from the can light to the room. - The method they give for determining if you have enough insulation is goofy. Instead, use the Insulation Upgrade Calculator or one of the online insulation guides to determine if your insulation is sufficient for your climate.

This guide has been written by the Wood Fuel South West Advice Service; a project funded by Woodland Renaissance, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the South West (AONBs) and the Forestry Commission. It is for people interested in finding out more about biomass boiler systems.
As a priority, before considering the installation of a biomass heating system, you should investigate the potential for energy efficiency measures. These will help to lower heating demands and result in the installation of a smaller and cheaper biomass system requiring less fuel.

A fascination for wind energy has driven both of us to build, buy, install, and maintain our own machines for the last three decades. Chances are that the first wind-energy users were driven by the same maniacal glee that we experience when we grab energy out of thin air. The design of home-scale wind-electric generators has been through many permutations and variations, with lots of circles and dead ends

Hydropower offers expanding opportunities to increase generation based on renewable, domestic, carbon-free technologies. This report presents a review of the possible contribution of waterpower technologies in the near-term (by 2010) and long-term (by 2025) to the U.S. renewable energy supply. Segments of the waterpower industry include conventional hydroelectric plants and emerging technologies that access the energy in river and tidal currents (hydrokinetic) as well as in ocean waves. The report documents how each segment of waterpower technology can contribute to increased production, discusses research questions that need to be answered to achieve the desired results, and reviews targeted economic incentives that can spur waterpower production.

- Investigate the key issues, especially including safety, associated with the installation of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
- Describe design and installation solutions that are acceptable to the building services industry and the relevant regulatory authorities.
- Translate these solutions into practical and authoritative installation guidelines with a particular emphasis on the domestic BIPV sector.
This document contains some of the background information which was used by the writers to produce the guide, named “Photovoltaics in Buildings: Guide to the installation of PV systems” (DTI/Pub URN 02/788). The guide itself contains the considered recommendations of the group after consultation with people in the industry. As such it constitutes the definitive material, not this report. Sometimes the information in this report is not conclusive and may at times present apparently conflicting pieces of information. Nevertheless decisions had to be made in the course of producing the guide which are sometimes based on caution or lack of substantiated background material. This report should be read in conjunction with the guide itself and may present the reader with some useful background information, but will not always be sufficient to fully explain the decisions in the guide. The guide was produced with the assistance of a Steering Committee to review progress from time to time. They consisted of the: ECA - The Electrical Contractor Association, who wish to see clear guidance targeted at their members for their own interest. HSE- The Health and Safety Executive had valuable input to the guide, as well as approving the health and safety aspects. NHBC- The National House Building Council, who publish codes of practice for the building trades and have a strong interest in technical standards from an insurance point of view. PV-UK – The British Photovoltaic Association, who has an obvious interest and have stated there is a need for such a guide. The guide concentrates on the electrical aspects of the installation, as the guide is for installers rather than designers, and it was assumed that the installer is more likely to be an electrician than from any other trade. There was to have been a section on the construction aspects but, because of the huge range of possible mounting methods, only one of which would be relevant for any particular installation, the section had to be either very large or had be pared down to a simple list. In the end it was decided to leave these things to the designer, but make the installer aware of them in the checklist. Generally suppliers can provide comprehensive installation advice as it relates to their particular product.
Some of the source documents, particularly Engineering recommendation G77 and part 712 of IEC60364, are in draft form. Where this is the case, the version at February 2002 should be considered as the version under discussion.

In this application note, wind turbine technology is presented as a serious alternative for achieving sustainable energy policy objectives. Several European countries have impressive plans for the coming years for installing large amounts of wind power generation. Some governments support these actions by providing tax or investment incentives. The northwest of Europe with its coastal windy waters and fine-meshed but strong electric grid give promising opportunities for investing companies and wind farm developers.

As many small-scale methods of electricity generation are available only intermittently, some form of electricity storage or battery is needed if people want to have electricity available at all times.
There are a wide range of batteries available, and the aim of this Technical Brief is to give an introduction to the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of batteries. The central point is that there is no such thing as a universal battery; a single type of battery cannot cover all applications.

Honey has a long and distinguished history in the human diet. For thousands of years honey hunters have plundered the hives of wild bees for their precious honey and beeswax - a practice still common today.
The most widely used honeybees are the European Apis mellifera, which have now been introduced worldwide. Tropical Africa has a native Apis mellifera, which is slightly smaller than the European Apis mellifera, and is more likely to fly off the comb and to sting. They are also more likely to abandon their hives if disturbed, and in some areas the colonies migrate seasonally.
In Asia there are three main native tropical species, Apis cerana, Apis dorsata, and Apis florea; cerana is the only species that can be managed in hives, but the single combs of the other two are collected by honey hunters.

Biogas is actually a mixture of gases, usually carbon dioxide and methane. It is produced by a few kinds of microorganisms, usually when air or oxygen is absent. (The absence of oxygen is called “anaerobic conditions.”) Animals that eat a lot of plant material, particularly grazing animals such as cattle, produce large amounts of biogas. The biogas is produced not by the cow or elephant, but by billions of microor- ganisms living in its digestive system. Biogas also develops in bogs and at the bottom of lakes, where decaying organic matter builds up under wet and anaerobic conditions.

This ebook contains a step-by-step guide to building a relatively sophisticated distillation apparatus from commonly available materials, using simple tools, and at a cost of under $100 USD. The information contained on this site is directed at anyone who may want to know more about the subject: students, hobbyists, tinkers, pure water enthusiasts, survivors, the curious, and perhaps even amateur wine and beer makers. Designing and building this apparatus is the only subject of this manual. You will find that it confines itself solely to those areas. It does not enter into the domains of fermentation, recipes for making mash, beer, wine or any other spirits. These areas are covered in detail in other readily available books and numerous web sites. The site contains two separate design plans for the stills. And while both can be used for a number of distillation tasks, it should be recognized that their designs have been optimized for the task of separating ethyl alcohol from a water-based mixture. Having said that, remember that the real purpose of this site is to educate and inform those of you who are interested in this subject. It is not to be construed in any fashion as an encouragement to break the law. If you believe the law is incorrect, please take the time to contact your representatives in government, cast your vote at the polls, write newsletters to the media, and in general, try to make the changes in a legal and democratic manner. As a final word, if you decide to build a still like this, you will be on your own. Almost all the electricity currently produced in the UK is generated as part of a centralised power system designed around large fossil fuel or nuclear power stations. This power system is robust and reliable but the efficiency of power generation is low, resulting in large quantities of waste heat. The principal aim of this paper is to investigate an alternative concept: the energy production by small scale generators in close proximity to the energy users, integrated into microgrids. Microgrids – de-centralised electricity generation combined with on-site production of heat - bear the promise of substantial environmental benefits. This is brought about by a higher energy efficiency and by facilitating the integration of renewable sources such as photovoltaic arrays or wind turbines. By virtue of a good match between generation and load, microgrids have a low impact on the electricity network, despite a potentially significant level of generation by intermittent energy sources. The paper discusses the technical and economic issues associated with this novel concept, giving an overview of the generator technologies, the current regulatory framework in the UK, and the barriers that have to be overcome if microgrids are to make a major contribution to the UK energy supply. The focus of this study is a microgrid of domestic users powered by small Combined Heat and Power generators and photovoltaics. Focusing on the energy balance between the generation and load, it is found that the optimum combination of the generators in the microgrid - consisting of around 1.4 kWp PV array per household and 45% household ownership of micro-CHP generators - will maintain energy balance on a yearly basis if supplemented by energy storage of 2.7kWh per household. We find that there is no fundamental technological reason why microgrids cannot contribute an appreciable part of the UK energy demand. Indeed, an estimate of cost indicates that the microgrids considered in this study would supply electricity at a cost comparable with the present electricity supply if the current support mechanisms for photovoltaics were maintained. Combining photovoltaics and micro-CHP and a small battery requirement gives a microgrid that is independent of the national electricity network. In the short term, this has particular benefits for remote communities but more wide-ranging possibilities open up in the medium to long term. Microgrids could meet the need to replace current generation nuclear and coal fired power stations, greatly reducing the demand on the transmission and distribution network.

Coal bed methane (CBM) is simply methane found in coal seams. CBM as a source of clean natural gas has immense potential. Methane gas is found trapped in fissures in coal and extraction reduces explosion hazards in mines, thereby reducing safety risks for miners. Thus, coal mine methane, a byproduct of mining operations, can be recovered to provide various types of benefits to a mining company.

Composting is the breakdown (or decomposition) of organic material (anything that was once alive) in the presence of oxygen (i.e. aerobic decomposition). Organic material can also decompose without oxygen, but this is slower and smellier, and tends to be called anaerobic decomposition or digestion. The composting process involves many tiny organisms, including bacteria, fungi, insects and worms. These organisms utilise the two main components of organic waste – carbon and nitrogen – and work in a series of stages. Each group breaks down organic material a little more and converts it into a form suitable for the next group in the chain to act upon. The end result is a beautiful crumbly compost that contains a mix of minerals that plants can absorb as nutrients.

The world’s energy system has bestowed great benefits on society, but it has also come with high price tag: climate change, which is occurring due to a build of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere caused by human activity; military and economic conflict due to uneven distribution of fossil resources; and millions of premature deaths and illness due to the air and water pollution inherent in fossil fuel production and consumption.

This manual describes how to build a 'permanent magnet generator' (PMG). We can also call it an 'alternator', because it generates alternating current (AC). It will not generate 'mains voltage' or 'utility power' AC. It generates low voltage, 'three phase' AC, and then changes it into 'direct current' (DC) for charging a 12 volt battery.
